Notice the plumes from shell bursts in the water. This was a tactic developed by the Japanese of firing your own 5-inch guns into the water ahead of a torpedo plane on his torpedo run to create just this kind of forest of plumes. Water plumes linger longer than momentary shell bursts and I had one torpedo pilot tell me that running into one of these plumes would be like running into a tree. Very effective defensive tactic against torpedo bombers.

The USS Alabama, my favorite WW2 battleship. Probably because i am from Alabama! But it's awesome to have a photo of her in action, even if she's in the background.

I boarded this ship quiet a few times in Mobile (which is now a museum and historic landmark), and she's as beautiful on the inside as she is the outside.
