Hiyo-class Escort Carrier

CountryJapan

Contributor: C. Peter Chen

This article refers to the entire Hiyo-class; it is not about an individual vessel.

Carriers Hiyo and Junyo were sister ships originally building as ocean liners. They were taken over by the Japanese Navy and were completed as carriers. They were not particularly useful vessels because their machinery was not up to the grade; they never made better than 23 knots in wartime service, meaning that they really could not keep up with other warships.
