This photo taken after LtCol Carmichael & others were issued a variety of awards. LtCol Carmichael received the Distinguished Service Cross (Army’s 2nd highest award) for leading a harrowing B-17 raid against Rabaul, New Britain 7 Aug 1942 the Silver Star for his leadership in a night attack on Rabaul 23 Feb 1942 and the Distinguished Flying Cross for landing his inbound B-17 under fire at Hickam Field during the attack on Pearl Harbor, 7 Dec 1941.
